Mortgage Interest Rates
To ask the Minister for Finance his views on the predicted increase in mortgage interest rates in 2011, which will add further financial pressure to hard-pressed homeowners, many of whom it is believed will fall behind on payments or face selling their homes as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter Education
Several schools throughout the constituency are in need of refurbishment or rebuilding while increasing class sizes are putting more pressure on already overstretched resources.
Job Creation
North and East Cork has been dealt a number of severe blows in terms of the loss of traditional industry.

Dail Resumes..some thoughts
Tuesday 14th september
A little note on the programme for the coming months. Sitting here watching Newsnight and there is a serious debate about the nature of capitalism and a new left idealogy to fit the current mess we are in. There is a fair comment from some professor who states that neither left nor right of the political spectrum has found a framework for society to operate under, given that this model of capitalism hasn't worked. Its food for thought and this will exercise me in the context of NAMA, Lisbon and the December Budget. The fundamental question is how we will shape a new society arisng from these current difficulties. How are we going to turn this around and make things better. And for me, the challenge will not just be to revert to 'how it was', but a model of economics and society that allows people to flourish and gives opportunities to prosper without entities such as banks and global financial institutions risking it all on reckless speculation. I will try and develop these this theme over the coming months...we need to get people back to work and get the economy going again. The only way we can do this is through a mix of stimulus and public spending savings (and not of the magnitude envisaged by McCarthy). I feel strongly that we will have to borrow more on international markets and I inhabit a school of thought that Governments have to borrow more in recessions because they become the only major actors in the economy and the multiplier from government spend in infrastructure has a positive impact on the economy. more of this anon. |
