LABOUR DUO WELCOME €1.9MILLION N8 REPAIR FUND

LABOUR Mayor of Fermoy Cllr Noel McCarthy and Cork East Labour TD Seán Sherlock have given a warm welcome to the €1.9million allocation for essential road works on the N8 road in Fermoy and Rathcormac.
"I am delighted that the funding for these much needed repairs has been finally allocated. The footpaths and road surfaces through the centre of Fermoy have been in need of proper remedial work," Cllr McCarthy said."Likewise the centre of Rathcormac, particularly the footpaths surrounding the school there, needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency."At this week's meeting of the Mallow/Fermoy Area Committee meeting I asked that the works planned for Fermoy are carried out between the first and second phase of the Flood Relief Works in the town."It is my belief that with the considerable traffic that goes through Fermoy, the town cannot accommodate these works going on at the same time, and I am glad that the Council Engineers share my view in this regard. Furthermore I am equally pleased that the proposed road works will be carried out during the school summer holidays to minimise the impact on local motorists," Cllr McCarthy concluded.Deputy Sherlock said the funding is welcome, but a long time coming."This news will be a welcome boost to Fermoy. The people of the town have complained for years about the condition of the route through the town. With the development of the tolled-by pass it appeared that the old Cork-Dublin road had been forgotten. "My understanding of the nature of the funding is that it is to be drawn from the NRA by the end of November."With that in mind I am pleased to see the expediency with which the Council are taking on the project, with the Part 8 for the proposed works to be published this Friday, March 12.
