Labour Deputy Sean Sherlock has welcomed the decision of the Agriculture Oireachtas Committee to extend an invitation to the Ombudsman to discuss the contents of her Lost at Sea Report.

Deputy Sherlock said: "This is long overdue and if the invitation had been extended to her sooner, we could have been spared a lot of unnecessary grandstanding."It is vital that the Ombudsman be given an opportunity to discuss this report openly so that the members of the Committee can question her directly on the terms of the scheme and her recommendations therein."The wider issue of her role within the Irish political and administrative system should also be discussed as well as her recent comments on the nature of the Irish parliamentary democracy."Labour has always held the view that due respect must be accorded to her recommendations so that every citizen can have faith in the complaints process. I hope that this will be a first step towards restoring that confidence."
