SHERLOCK PRESSES THE CASE FOR LOCAL BIO-FUEL PRODUCTION

Cork East Labour TD Seán Sherlock has introduced an amendment to the Bio- Fuel Bill currently before the Dáil which will be discussed this week

The purpose of the amendment is to stimulate the local production of first and secondd generation bi-fuels throughout rural Ireland which will stimulate the local economy.

"Ireland has to meet its obligation to produce alternate fuels that have a 5% fuel mix. There is a danger that the big oil industry companies will import cheaper substitutes to meet targets. Our aim is to stimulate local production by ensuring that a tariff is put on imported alternative fuel sources," explained the Labour TD.

"This is already happening in other EU countries. I believe there is a fledgling industry here and in order to support that we have to ensure that we support local industry and start-ups involved in this market,

"The net effect of the amendment to the bill is that it will ensure local producers in this market can create jobs and that is the bottom line," he asserted.

Ombudsman should address Oireachtas Committee on Lost at Sea Report
I don't want to start with a litany of platitudes and I don't want to patronize anyone in any way. But I do feel it is vital that we recognize the suffering and hardship endured by the Byrne family for too many years in seeking to attain redress for their suffering. We must also acknowledge the loss of lives of three crewmen and the father and uncle of Mr Danny Byrne, the complainant. It is important that we keep this family to the forefront of our minds when speaking to the issue. The matter at hand is a simple one. To my mind it is about natural justice and whether or not the Byrne family received due recognition for their complaint and whether the agencies of the State responded proportionately to their needs.

Horses and greyhounds need a level playing pitch
Speaking at the launch of 'Raising The Stakes' Labour Proposals to Tax Remote Betting and Reform the Funding of the Horse and Greyhound Fund, Deputy Sherlock said "The document we are publishing today highlights in a very useful way, some of the emerging issues in the racing industries that really need to be tackled. One area of particular concern to me is the fact that while a bet placed by a punter in a high street bookie is subject to a betting levy, a bet placed online, on the same horse, in the same race, is tax freeThis situation is not sustainable. We believe that it is fair that remote gambling operations pay their fair share the same as high street bookmakers. Every bet placed in the Irish state should contribute to the betting levy, regardless of the method of placement."
