MEETING SIGNALS HOPE FOR WORKS TO N72

Labour Party Councillor Ronan Sheehan said he is hopeful that funding will be released for long overdue improvements to the N72 following a meeting with the National Roads Authority in Dublin this week
Cllr Sheehan, who chaired a delegation of elected councillors and officials, to the meeting with Michael Egan, Head of the NRA's corporate affairs unit described the meeting as a ‘positive development'.

"This followed numerous requests from the members of the Northern Committee of Cork County Council for a meeting to highlight the genuine concerns we all have regarding the safety of this stretch of road. It was a strong delegation that travelled to Dublin intent on hammering our message home and this was duly noted by Mr Egan and his team," said Cllr Sheehan.

"My party colleague Seán Sherlock TD had previously met with the NRA and received a commitment that a road survey would be carried out at Carrig, Mallow. This was reaffirmed to us during the course of Monday's meeting," he added.

Meanwhile, Fermoy based Councillor Noel McCarthy also impressed on the NRA the need for road realignment works on the Fermoy to Castletownroche stretch of this route.

"We were assured that the N72 has been earmarked as a priority. It was also stated that we can expect to hear from the National Roads Authority within a matter of weeks on their plans for this stretch of road which has been identified as one of the ten most dangerous roads in the Republic of Ireland," said Cllr McCarthy
