COUNCIL MUST RETURN TO DRAWING BOARD ON MITCHELSTOWN LIBRARY PLANSLABOUR Party TD Seán Sherlock said he will be calling on Cork County Council to do a major rethink on their plans to relocate Mitchelstown Library to Sutton's Court now that the project has run into delays
"The revelation this week that the company contracted to fit out the new library is no longer in a position to carry out the work at Sutton's Corner, coupled with the imminent closure of Mitchelstown Court sittings, suggests to me that the best option all round would be to rehouse the existing library at the courthouse.
"The people of Mitchelstown cannot be expected to wait another year or more for an accessible library facility. This would mean a very simple move from upstairs to downstairs and would solve a whole host of problems including concerns about accessibility to the library for disabled and older users of the service, "The council has to return to the drawing board on this one. I appreciate that a lease has been signed with regard to the premises at Sutton's Corner but there is no reason why this cannot now be used for another purpose. I know a lot of people who were not happy with the library going to Sutton's corner. They have indicated to me that keeping the library at the courthouse would be the preferred option and I will be calling on the council to pursue this course of action," said Deputy Sherlock. |
