Cork East Labour Party TD Seán Sherlock has welcomed confirmation that Mallow General Hospital is amongst the top performing hospitals in the country and officially the best performing in Cork.

Cork East Labour Party TD Seán Sherlock has welcomed confirmation that Mallow General Hospital is amongst the top performing hospitals in the country and officially the best performing in Cork.

Responding to the publication of detailed performance figures of 29 acute public hospitals around the country by the HSE Deputy Sherlock who is secretary of Mallow Hospital Action Committee said: "We already know that Mallow General Hospital is an excellent facility but to have it officially in writing from the HSE is a huge boost to all of us who have been campaigning long and hard to have enhance existing services in Mallow,

"Hygiene and care standards at Mallow General are second to none. The loyalty and commitment of staff is also a major contributing factor to its successful performance in the Healthstats report,

"We see these results as giving us a fighting chance to put forward a case for the enhancement as opposed to downgrading of services at Mallow General,

"Those of us involved with the campaign to preserve and build on services at the hospital will now be seeking a meeting with Professor John Higgins who is to oversee the reconfiguration of hospitals in the south."
