SELF-EMPLOYED URGED TO CHECK OUT ENTITLEMENTS
CORK East Labour TD Seán Sherlock is urging self-employed workers who cannot find employment to visit their social welfare office to seek assistance.
Deputy Sherlock said he wished to dispel the notion that those out there who were self-employed will receive nothing from the state on that basis. "While I am not saying that everyone will qualify for assistance there is a real possibility that many former self employed workers will qualify for some sort of payment," he said. He added that in reply to a question on the issue which he had tabled to Minister for Social & Family Affairs Mary Hanafin, the Minister stated "It is recognised that the present downturn in the economy is having a significant impact on many self-employed persons and the consequent reduction in their income and activity levels would be reflected in any assessment of their means from self-employment for jobseeker's allowance purposes. The Social Welfare Inspectors take account of this fact in projecting future earnings." Based on her comments, Deputy Sherlock said he would encourage former self-employed people to seek assistance if needed. "My advice to people in this situation is to pursue the matter. Those who do not qualify for jobseekers benefit which is based on PRSI contributions may qualify for jobseekers allowance provided they satisfy the normal conditions which include a means test," said The Labour TD » MINISTER ENCOURAGES JUNIOR CERT STUDENTS TO CONTINUE THEIR STUDIES IN SCIENCE AND HIGHER LEVEL MATHS
