TDs join forces to prevent axing of bus services
MUNSTER based Labour TDs Seán Sherlock and Brian O'Shea have joined forces to prevent plans for what they have described as ‘the complete obliteration of bus services' across counties Cork and Waterford by Bus Eireann
The Labour duo are to table a joint motion before the Dáil calling for immediate intervention to prevent the axing of vital bus services that will leave hundreds of people cut off from accessing basic goods and services. "There are people across our constituencies who will be left completely stranded as a result of the move. Both our offices have been inundated with calls from people using the service who are understandably very distressed," said Deputy Sherlock. "Many of the areas serviced by the Dungarvan to Mallow bus route have already lost banks and post offices leaving people with no choice but to travel. This is a callous move by Bus Eireann that will obliterate bus services in rural areas from Lismore and Tallow right up to Castlelyons and Castletownroche," he added. Sources have confirmed that the Monday, Thursday and Saturday service from Dungarvan to Mallow is to be completely discontinued while they are also real fears for similar services operated in other parts of the county. However, both Deputy Seán Sherlock and Brian O'Shea are now looking into the existence of an agreement that obligates the state to ensure transport services in areas previously served by the railway line. "We believe there is some form of agreement that was drawn up when the railways closed down to ensure people still had access to transport. We are looking into this and will our utmost to retain this vital service," insisted Deputy O'Shea.
