The dispute, which centres around the contract for the dispensing of drugs under the medical card and other schemes, may also force many small local pharmacies to close their doors according to the Labour TD.

"From the outset the Labour Party has supported the right of the pharmacies to a fair process and to representation by their Union. When the Government and the HSE claimed that they were prohibited by the Competition Act from entering into such discussions, we put forward a Bill to amend the Act but this was voted down by the Government Parties," said Deputy Sherlock.

"We have continued to urge the Government to postpone the proposed changes until the Independent Body that is examining the issue, has reported. I understand this report is due by the end of May. However, the Minister and the HSE seem determined to push ahead with the proposals nonetheless," he added.Deputy Sherlock described the situation as worrying for all those who depend on having drugs dispensed under the medical card and similar schemes, while he said pharmacists across Cork are also extremely anxious.

"It is vital that a mechanism is found to solve the impasse and we will continue to press the Government as the deadline approaches. At the end of the day, the real losers in this sorry saga will be the public as they may not be able to get their medicine. It will also see smaller pharmacies re-evaluate their position with regard to competing against the bigger chains," he said.
