HSE staff embargo wreaking havoc for disabled persons
DEPUTY Sean Sherlock has said the HSE staffing embargo is wreaking havoc for disabled persons applying for grant aid for home improvements
DEPUTY Sean Sherlock has said the HSE staffing embargo is wreaking havoc for disabled persons applying for grant aid for home improvements. The Labour TD said in some cases applicants are waiting up to forty weeks to be visited by an occupational therapist "The effects of the staffing embargo are being clearly felt on the ground by those with a disability who are seeking financial assistance for essential home improvements which can include re-wiring, sanitary services and heating," "A number of posts remain unfilled across the county while the most vulnerable members of society are the ones ultimately paying the price for this recruitment ban," he said. Deputy Sherlock said it is time for the HSE to clarify its position on the occupational therapy shortfall while he is also calling on Environment Minister to intervene. "The housing adaptation grant for persons with a disability is funded by the Department of the Environment. However, it is not being effectively administered because of staff shortages in the HSE. I have now highlighted the seriousness of this issue with both Minister Gormley and Health Minister Mary Harney," he said.
